According to scholars it was the first cathedral built in ancient Armenia and is considered the oldest cathedral in the world.

The Church of Shoghakat was erected in 1694 by Prince Aghamal Sorotetsi during the reign of Catholicos Nahabed I in the city of Vagharshapat, in Armenia's Armavir Province.

There are plenty of interesting sculptural remnants surrounding the main structure – look out for the carved eagle capital in particular. Around the cathedral are the ruins of the palace of the Catholicos and the wine press and stone tanks of a massive medieval winery.

Of all the structures only the main church of St. Nishan (967-991) with sculptural images on the outside and frescos (13th-14th centuries) inside, St. Gregory Church (1005), the small dome church of St. Astvatsatsin (12th-13th centuries), the 13th-century cafeteria, the 13th-century book depository, the belfry (1245), and khachkars have survived.
