Carriere Square at 10 Place de la Carriere
The discrete long square is part of the architectural ensemble of the 18th century wanted by Stanisław I Leszczyński, former King of Poland and father-in-law to King Louis XV of France. During the ducal period, the long square was used for horse training and served as a jousting and tournaments arena, hence its name of “Carrière” meaning racecourse.
Stanislas Square at Place Stanislas
The design created a large urban square or place that linked two handsome existing buildings: the Hotel de Ville (city hall, now centred on its grand square) and the Hotel du Gouvernement, the seat of the duchy. The seat of city government and the seat of Ducal government thus faced each other as complements through a series of rational, symmetrical but varied urban spaces, unequalled in Europe at the time.
Alliance Square at place d'Alliance
The square forms a 80m by 60m rectangle. It is surrounded by sober classical houses of similar style and height built in the 18th century. The centre of the square is marked by a double row of old linden trees. Some of the original trees which were planted in 1763 are still visible today.
